What is Occupy Edmonton?

*This page is still being written. Please check back here for updates.

The activists involved in Occupy Edmonton hope that their presence downtown and example of shared life will inspire a change in how we all treat one another, especially when it comes to our just and merciful treatment of those in debt or without adequate income.

There are three issues in our economy and system of government that the Occupy movement generally agrees are the main things they want to see change.

1 - The vast and quickly expanding income disparity between the richest people and everyone else. This is not just an issue of wealth, but the ability to obtain wealth. While the income of the richest Canadians and Americans continue to go up, the income of the middle class remains the same.

2 - The undemocratic influence of money in politics. Unfortunately, our system of government does not work on a system of equal voice and influence for all. The more money one has to influence government, the more one's voice is heard.

3 - The use of the people's tax money to prop up or bail out banks and corporations who fail because of their own mismanagement.

These three problems are often seen as intertwined, each exacerbating the others.

We recognize that not everyone will agree with this analysis and criticism of our economy and government. Some may not agree with all of Occupy's methods. We still want to encourage Christians to pray. Please pray for those involved. Please pray for God's justice. Please pray for God's will on earth and in Occupy, as in Heaven.
